MAVCO
for Macular Degeneration
Macular Degeneration is a degenerative condition
that effects the central retina called the macula
(see illustration). The macula is approximately
the size of a match head. It is incredibly important
because it contains the highest density of photoreceptors.
These enable tasks such as reading, watching television
and looking at people's faces.
|
|
Losing macular function
through macular degeneration is devastating and irreversible.
The process may be slow and progressive leading to
patchy vision over time, likened to wearing out a
piece of carpet (90% of cases) called dry macular
degeneration. Alternatively deterioration may
be rapid, occurring sometimes within days (10% of
cases) called wet macular degeneration. Macular degeneration
typically affects the older population, however not
exclusively, and is the major cause of blindness in
people over 65 years of age.

MAVCO
for
Eyes (AREDS research + Lutein Formula)
MAVCO
for
Eyes (AREDS research + Lutein Formula)
provides a comprehensive source of antioxidants (Vitamins
A, C, E and Zinc) recommended by eye specialists to
help delay the progression to advanced wet macular
degeneration. These vitamins were studied in the Age-Related
Eye Disease Study (AREDS)
A recent study of 5836 subjects (The
Rotterdam Study) now suggests that antioxidants
could not only slow moderate macular degeneration
but may also prevent it from developing in the first
place.
The US National Eye Institute has stated that a diet
alone cannot provide the same high levels of antioxidants
and zinc as the AREDS formulation. However a diet
rich in green leafy vegetables has been linked to
lowering the risk of developing age related macular
degeneration.
Lutein is a pigment deposited in
the macula which is thought to act as a blue filter
protecting against phototoxic damage. Lutein was not
formally studied during the AREDS Study as it was
not available commercially at the time. Current studies
regarding lutein protection against age related macular
degeneration are not conclusive however a number of
studies suggest a link between lutein and decreased
risk of eye disease. In particular a recent study
Lutein Antioxidant Supplementation
Trial (LAST) study demonstrated that lutein
supplementation increased the macular pigmentation
believed to protect against ultraviolet damage.
It is recommended that beta-carotene not to be used
by those who are currently smoking or have ceased
within the last five years. It may be necessary to
discuss with your health practitioner the need to
balance the risk of a possible increase of lung cancer
associated with beta-carotene against the risk of
progression of severe macular degeneration.

MAVCO recommends
using the Amsler Grid at least once a week to monitor
your vision.
The grid below should be printed and placed in a
prominent place such as on the fridge or in the
bathroom so that it is not forgotten.
Cover one eye and have this page at an ordinary
reading distance. Use your reading glasses if required
to see the grid clearly. Look at the black spot
in the centre of the chart below. Repeat the above
step with your other eye.
If you notice that in either eye there is a change
in your vision such as the straight lines on the
grid become distorted (wavy or bent), dark greyish
patches appear or the central dot is no longer visible,
you need to consult your eye specialist, optometrist
or family physician.
Stopping smoking as this group develops MD three
times as frequently and 10 years sooner than non-smokers
or those who have quit. Diet rich in leafy green
vegetables, nuts, fish. Virgin olive oil is preferable.

Lubricants
MAVCO recommends
eye lubrication which is particularly more important
during dry months of the year. As we age tear production
is suboptimal and can lead to dry eyes. Dry eyes leads
to poor vision due to the corneal(outer surface of
the eye) dispersing light and in extreme cases can
lead to permanent eye damage.
MAVCO recommends
artificial tear supplementation to prevent dry eyes.
It is not possible to overdose on artificial tears
and may be used with other eye medication however
it is not to be used with a history of allergy to
preservatives found in artificial tears."

UV
Protection
MAVCO recommends
protecting the eyes with sunglasses against the harmful
effects of the sun. There is evidence that ultraviolet
radiation from the sun increases the risk of cortical
cataract (clouding of the lens requiring surgery),
some conjunctival (transparent layer over the white
of the eye) diseases such as pterygia and cancers,
eye melanoma and damage to the retina in the form
of macular degeneration.

Molecular Biology 2006 Feb 28).
